Illnesses have been plaguing several in our neighborhood for the past few weeks. This week, the germs caught up with me. I’ve been confined to the house all week. Jes told me to get out and get some fresh air and finally on Sunday, I ventured out. Being outside always helps me.
We had a houseguest this week. My son Cole had some training he had to take at the company headquarters in Scottsbluff, Nebraska so early Monday morning he dropped off his dog, Sarge, to spend the week with us. Sarge and Coco had gotten along so well at Thanksgiving I could foresee no problems.
Sarge is a strange little dog, a bulldog\\pug cross. No nose, neck, ears or tail—he looks like a brown watermelon with legs. He reminds me somewhat of the stray pig that hangs around Rings feedlot.
At home in Rapid, Sarge is a housedog. Cole takes him for the occasional 4-wheeler and side-by-side ride on the weekend, and on early morning walks around the neighborhood on a leash. While Cole is at work, Sarge has the house to himself.
The first day was exciting, Sarge met the cattle when Jes fed and was chased back to the gate several times until he learned to stay closer to Coco who knew just how far the cows would come. Later in the afternoon, after Jes had left for town, I happened to look out the window and saw Coco looking south down the road. I ran out and called but no Sarge. I jumped in the Jeep and headed south and met Sarge running back down the hill. I don’t know how far he’d gone following Jes, but he eagerly jumped in the Jeep, his short legs thankful for the ride home.
Out here in the country, the closest Sarge got to “inside” was the porch where Otto the tomcat reigns. The warm days early in the week were no problem since Otto spends his nights out tom-catting around, then sleeps in the porch all day. As I threw Otto out, Sarge would come in and vice versa . But that changed when the weather turned cold on Wednesday. It didn’t seem fair to force the house dog to spend the cold days out in the bitter temperatures and it had already been established that there was no way Coco was allowing Sarge in her house. The houseguest and tomcat were forced to spend time together.
By the time Cole arrived on Friday evening the two animals were tolerating each other. Sarge was wanting to play but the distain on Otto’s face obvious. Once I even looked out and saw the two of them laying on the same rug. Not touching but tolerating the other. Cole and Sarge packed up and went back to Rapid early on Saturday morning and all is back to normal.
Have a good week.
