The four blood pressure categories are based on blood pressures obtained in a healthcare facility at two different times. If a person has a systolic (SBP and diastolic (DSP) in two different measurement categories, the plan of care will be based on the highest blood pressure category.
Many people in Stage 1 hypertension can by simple lifestyle changes lower blood pressure back to a normal range. Work with a health care provider for developing a health plan that involves implementing healthy diet changes such as lowering salt intake, increased fiber, adding more fruits, vegetables, leaner meat choices and drinking alcohol in moderation or not at all. Another important lifestyle change is adding or increasing different forms of exercise to the daily routine. A 10lb. weight loss can result in lowering blood pressure by 5mm hg.
If blood pressure remains elevated after changes in diet and activities, then a healthcare provider will prescribe medication at the lowest medication dose possible to have blood pressure in the target range of lower than 130/80. Uncontrolled elevated blood pressure over time leads to heart attack, stroke and heart failure.
Hypertensive Crisis is systolic higher than 180 or diastolic higher than 120 and medical care is needed immediately For more information: https://www.heart.org/en/ health- topic s/ high- bloodpressure/ high-blood-pressuretoolkit- resources
