By Tim Huether Bennett County traveled to St. Francis last Friday night for a girls and boys doubleheader and the girls dominated the game for a 6239 win.

St. Francis led 3-0 in a slow going first quarter. Bennett County would go up 10-8 at the end of the first quarter with Amia Cottier scoring six of those points. Cottier would go on to have a big game with 23 points to lead all scorers.

Bennett County would lead 31-20 at the half with Cottier scoring 9 points and Madi Waln 4 in the second quarter.

The visiting Bennett County Warriors sent St. Francis to the line for 12 free throws in the third quarter, but they made just four of them while the visitors put up 14 points for a 45-28 Bennett County lead after three quarters.

From there, Bennett County coasted to a 62-39 win.

“A win against a Region opponent is always good and to win it in their gym is especially nice,” said head coach Duke Waln. “We have yet to have the team play well for the entire game, but we are starting to get more players to understand that they have a role on the team and that we need them to fill that role. When we got into transition, we got great looks and it helped with our ball pressure. For this team, those two things go hand-in-hand. Rebounding will continue to be an emphasis for us going into the offseason. When we decide to control the boards, we will take another big leap forward.”

Player of the game is Amia Cottier.

Scoring for Bennett County: Amia Cottier 23, Madi Waln 9, Sophia May 8, Jadyn Standing Soldier 7, Kaylee Byrne 6, Ally Salomon 2, Raven Heathershaw 2, Catelyn Fry 2.

The JV girls took care of business as well, winning 5620.

Harley Harris led the JV team with 14 points. Reagan O’Neill added 10, Madi Waln 8, Jadyn Standing Soldier 8, Jersey Frederick 5, Peyson O’Neill 5, Kaylee Byrne 4 and Niasha Whirlwind Horse 2.
