Miss Ella Dover, Martin, South Dakota Dear Miss Dover: Maybe you will think it is funny to get a letter from a person you don’t know or even heard of. To start with my name is Pvt. William Hess. I am in the Army. How I come to get your name and address was on a scarf you must have knit for the Red Cross. I happened to get your scarf you knitted with your name on it. We, I mean us solders up here in Camp Upton, received scarfs and sweaters that were knitted in South Dakota. May be the same Red Cross that is where you work. They are very nice sweaters and scarfs. The boys told me to write in this letter to thank all of you women that knitted those things for the Army and I know they thank you for the things the same as we do, here in Camp Upton. And they also say “God bless you women in the Red Cross”. A soldier, Pvt. Bill Hess
