By Tim Huether The Lady Warriors hosted the Jones Co. Lady Coyotes last Saturday in high school girls basketball, with the visitors pulling away late for a 51-38 win.
It was a good game most of the way with four lead changes in the first quarter as the two teams battled back and forth. After the Lady Coyotes took a 6-2 lead, the Warriors went ahead 7-6 on a three point basket by Hadley Schomp and a field goal by Madi Waln.
Jones County went back up by one, but Amia Cottier and Madi Waln both had steals and layups to put Bennett County on top 11-8.
The teams would end up in a tie at 13 to end the first quarter.
Cottier scored the first four points of the second quarter for a 17-13 score, but Jones County would tie the game at 17. The Warriors would hold the lead at the half at 26-24.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle to score but the Lady Coyotes would lead 36-31 going to the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Lady Warriors went cold and Jones County drove it to the hoop time and time again, extending their lead to 50-33 late in the game. They would wrap up the road win with a 51-38 score.
“We competed for the first half, but we tired both mentally and physically in the second half,” said coach Waln. “This was a game that just got away from us. Unfortunately, we have to make these adjustments during games as this next is very busy. The girls usually respond well to challenges, so I am excited to see our response this week.”
Player of the game is Madi Waln.
Amia Cottier led the Lady Warrior offense with 14 points, all in the first half. Madi Waln added 10 point, Hadley Schomp 6, Kaylee Byrne 6 and Jadyn Standing Soldier 2.
