By Scott Bidroski During the National Western Stock Show, which is hosted annually in Denver, Colo., some local cattle with ties to the Sheridan County area were recognized.

In the Maternal Merit Sale on January 10, 15 head of Simangus bred heifers were sold with one of the lots selling for the highest price per head in the entire sale.

Those heifers were sourced from the Coats Ranch and sold by Stockmen’s Source.

The Coats Ranch is located near Porcupine, S.D. and is ran by Marvin and Janet Coats along with their son Kalen and his wife Anna. Kalen and Anna also have their two sons on the ranch with them as well.

Even though the ranch is headquartered near Porcupine, S.D., the ties to Sheridan County for this family run deep.

Janet currently works at 21st Century Equipment in Gordon and Kalen is a Gordon-Rushville High School graduate.

TravisChrismanandJeremy Martin are the representatives from Stockman’s Source and they state that the heifers they presented at the sale are oneiron heifers from longtime friends and clients, the Coats Ranch.

The three lots sold for $2,800, $2,750, and $3,600 per head at the sale.
