Tuesday, Nov. 29, we, the Bennett County Warrior Wrestling team, kicked off our season with a trip to Red Cloud and a match up against Hill City and Red Cloud. This is always a good meet for us as we start the season, especially for our younger kids. Most of our guys were able to get in two or three matches although in a few cases we had to run some exhibition matches amongst ourselves in the process.
Overall, the meet gave us some indication of where our strong areas are as well as some areas we still need some work.
Friday, we traveled to Crawford for our first tournament of the year. Last year at this tournament, we came up just short of winning the team title so we had that as our team goal going in. We moved about half of the team up a weight class thinking it would improve our overall team effort…and it paid off. We came away with six individual champions, the team title and Sam Ireland was named the tourney’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Teams competing (in order of finish): Bennett Co. (BC) 162, Lingle-Ft. Laramie (LFL) 155, Lusk (L) 89, Hay Springs (HS) 63, Hemingford (H) 34, Crawford (C) 30, Minatare (M) 26, Banner Co. (BaC) 25, Sioux Co. (SC) 19, Midwest (Mid) 3.
By moving our line-up around, we were able to fill all but two weight classes (12 of 14). That gave us an edge on the competition and allowed us to score points in all 12 of those weight classes so it really was a team effort. Having individual and team aspirations always makes things a bit more exciting.
