Whirlwind Horse wins 170 pound title at Hot Springs tournament

This past weekend, the BCHS Wrestling Team traveled to Hot Springs for their annual Holiday Classic. This is always a tough 2-day tournament with some of the best West River wrestlers competing.

Teams competing (in order of finish): Spearfish Lead/Deadwood (SLD) 201.5, Custer (C) 179.5, Hot Springs (HS) 178, Douglas (D) 148.5, Lingle/Ft. Laramie (LFL) 136, Bennett Co. (BC) 128, Sturgis JV (S) 126, Rapid City Central JV (RCC) 119, Newell (N) 112.5, Rapid City Stevens JV (RCS) 87.5, Lyman (L) 69, Hill City (HC) 61, Harding Co. (HC) 52, Hay Springs (Hay) 49, St. Thomas More (STM) 37, Crawford (Cra) 36.5, Belle Fourche JV (BF) 7.

We knew going into the tournament that we would have a hard time matching our third place finish from last year because we were not at full strength due to illness and injury. As it turned out, the overall numbers for the tournament were also up which made it that much more difficult but it did provide for some exciting wrestling all weekend long. With a mix of both Class A and B schools competing there were on average two rated wrestlers at each weight class.

Sam ran into a couple of ranked kids this weekend. The first he defeated quite impressively but in the finals he came up short against the 5th rated kid from SLD.

Brad got in the most matches this weekend (6) and ended up with a 6th place finish. He lost a close 2 point match in the medal round that could have gone either way.

Seth won a nail biter on a last second takedown to get into the finals. However, there he met up with the #1 rated wrestler from Hot Springs and ended up with a 2nd place finish.

Lincoln had one of his best outings so far bringing home our only individual championship. He cruised through his first two matches and then won by 6 in the finals.

Dalton would more than likely have come away with an easy championship at his normal weight class of 182 but decided to move up to 195 to face the #1 rated and nationally ranked wrestler from SLD, Nate Rotert. He coasted to the finals where he lost in one of the more exciting matches of the tournament. Several coaches and referees afterwards took the time to congratulate Dalton for taking on the challenge and turning in an impressive performance despite the defeat.

Sawyer had a couple of rated kids in his bracket that battled it out for the top two spots while Sawyer and the Douglas wrestler battled for the next two spots. These two met twice during the tournament with Sawyer winning the first match and the Douglas kid getting the second one which left Sawyer with 4th place.

On Saturday, they ran a round robin tournament for those wrestlers who were eliminated during Friday’s competition. This was a good opportunity for our guys who didn’t place to get in some additional wrestling. Adam was 0-2 but lost in an exciting overtime match. Tate went 1-2, Harlen 1-1 and Tyler was 2-0.

Overall, this was a great weekend for us. Not that everyone did as well as they might have liked, but each was pushed, in some cases further and harder than they have been pushed all year. Nearly everyone was involved in a tight match decided by a point or two (some won and some lost). These were just the kind of matches that we needed at this point in the season and will only help us to improve.
