Coach Joe Waln sets up his defense

Bennett County moved to 2-0 on the season in boys basketball after picking up their second road win, downing Gordon-Rushville 63-55 in Gordon Dec. 16. Bennett County scored the first six points of the game and never trailed as they put the Mustangs in a deep hole early, shooting to a 24-11 lead at the first buzzer.

The Warriors used hot outside shooting to put the Mustangs on their heels, nailing six three pointers in the opening quarter. Gordon Rushville had three of their own from long range, but Bennett County out-gunned them. Ryan Richards made three, Eli Livermont two and Dayre Evans one three pointer.

Gordon-Rushville stepped up their defense in the second quarter, allowing the Warriors just four points, while scoring eight to make it a game. The Mustang's senior standout guard Kalen Coats spent most of the first half on the bench with three quick fouls.

In the third quarter, both teams played well, but Gordon-Rushville slowly chipped away at the lead and the quarter ended with Bennett County up 40-37.

The Mustangs looked like they had the momentum when they tied the game at 42 on a three pointer by Coats, but Bennett County responded with a 9-0 run to jump on top 51-42, with Wade Porch scoring four straight points and Evans and Richards adding field goals.

Gordon-Rushville was forced to foul down the stretch and Bennett County made 10 of 12 free throws to close out the game as Dayre Evans made 7 of 8 of his shots from the line.

Dayre Evans led all scorers with 19, followed by Wade Porch with 15, Eli Livermont 12, Ryan Richards 11, Jacob Waln 5 and Will Schulz 1.

Gordon-Rushville was led by Joe Jackson's 18, 14 from Marcus Fairhead, Renen Sahr 12, Calen Coats 4, Barry Toczek 3, Daniele Marozzi 2 and Ryan Burdine 2.
