Lincoln Whirlwind Horse bats down a pass on defense
By Tim Huether
Bennett County used a good mix of solid defensive play and a balanced offensive attack to shut down and shut out an athletic Red Cloud team 44-0 last Friday in high school football.
The host Warriors started off with a little shaky, fumbling the ball away at mid-field on their first possession, but the defense held and the Warriors were soon back on offense.
Quarterback Kray Krolikowski hit tight end John O’Neill who ran a fly from his line position, and he sprinted to the end zone for a 45 yard touchdown for the game’s first score at the 2:46 mark of the first quarter. The Wade Porch kick after was wide left making it a 6-0 game.
On the Warrior’s next possession, Krolikowski was hit as he went to pass and the ball was fumbled back to Red Cloud at the Red Cloud 42 yard line to end the first quarter.
Bennett County’s defense again forced a three and out and after that, the Warriors did a good job of taking care of the ball.
Jon McDonnell had a nice run of 41 yards to set up a five yard scoring run by Dalton McCollam to make it 12-0. Porch’s kick after made it 13-0.
After another defensive stop, the Warriors marched down the field and Krolikowski scored on a dive from one yard out with 2:39 to play in the half. Porch’s kick after made it 20-0 and that would be the last score of the half.
In the third, Dalton McCollam scored from a yard out with 9:31 to play in that quarter. After the kick after was missed, the score was 26-0, Bennett County.
Red Cloud tried taking their passing game deep, but senior Jon McDonnell made a nice interception and after getting face masked, the Warriors set up on offense at their own 42.
Lukas Divan scored from five yards out with 5:31 to play in the third quarter and the missed kick made it 32-0.
The Warriors scored again after a 33 yard pass to Jeremy Huether put them near the goal, and Jon McDonnell scored on a five yard pass from Krolikowski to put the game away at 38-0 with 2:40 to play in the third quarter. The pass attempt for two points was no good.
On the Warriors next possession, Lukas Divan scored on a nice run around the left side of the line for a 45 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion again failed, making the final score, 44-0.
Juniors Dalton McCollam and Lukas Divan had big games, with McCollam carrying the ball 22 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Divan rushed for 60 yards on three carries and two touchdowns.
