Eli Livermont knocks the ball loose

By Tim Huether
Bennett County started well, playing even up with Custer Friday night in high school football play in Martin, but key mistakes by the hosts, gave the Wildcats a short field too many times and Custer took advantage and pounded out a 35-6 win.
Bennett County scored their only points on a Kray Krolikowski five yard touchdown run on the last play of the game.
Custer started the game with the ball first and marched down to the Warriors eight yard line, where they went for the lead on a fourth and eight, but Bennett County stopped them on a pass play, taking over from there.
After a Warrior three and out on offense, Custer took over on the Warrior 30 yard line. The Warrior defense held them and the Wildcats attempted a field goal from 41 yards, but it was wide left, keeping the game scoreless.
Bennett County mishandled the snap on a punt attempt and Custer took over at the Warrior’s 25 yard line early in the second quarter. Custer was knocking on the door for a score, but the Warriors defense held, and on a fourth and goal at the one, the Wildcats fumbled and Eli Livermont recovered the ball at the one.
Bennett County would end up punting from the end zone and Custer’s Trevor Schryvers took the punt 36 yards for a touchdown with 7:50 to play in the half. The kick after was good.
After another Warrior punt, Custer tried throwing deep and on a freak play, Bennett County’s Eli Livermont intercepted the ball, but the Custer receiver running by, stripped the ball out of his hands and ran to the six yard line. Tyler Schulz pounded it in for a score from there, quickly putting Custer on top, 14-0, following the kick after with 2:48 to play in the half.
The Warrior offense stalled again and a short punt put Custer back in good field position and they again capitalized, scoring quickly on an eight yard pass play to Chad Bryant with 33 seconds to play. The kick after made it 21-0, and that is how the half would end.
In the second half, Bennett County began to wear down on defense and Custer struck again in the third quarter on a deep pass play with Chase Glazier throwing to Chad Bryant for a touchdown, making it 28-0.
The Warriors shot themselves in the foot again on offense when the center snapped the ball over quarterback Kray Krolikowski’s head and the Wildcats picked up the ball and scored again with 4:25 to play in the third. The point after made it 35-0.
The Warriors put together a nice drive, marching down the field on a good mix of pass plays and runs, capping it off with a five yard touchdown run by Krolikowski as time expired, making it a final score of 35-6.
The game was much closer than the score would indicate, but costly mistakes by the Warrior on offense, put the defense in bad field position too many times. Custer took care of the ball and took advantage.
Bennett County hosts Red Cloud Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
The Warriors fall to 1-1 on the season and Custer goes to 2-0.
