In a game of big plays, Lead-Deadwood had the last one and it turned out to be the game winner as they defeated Bennett County 21-17 Friday night when Senior Josh Larson returned a kickoff 85 yards with 4:14 to play in the high school football game.
Bennett County had just taken the lead, 17-15, on a Wade Porch 24 yard field goal with 4:29 to play in the game, but Larson, who had a monster night, made the Warrior lead short-lived.
Lead-Deadwood was first on the board with a Josh Larson 75 yard punt return for a touchdown at the 4:45 mark of the opening quarter. The kick after made it 7-0.
Bennett County responded right back as Sophomore Brad Hahn took the kickoff that followed, 72 yards for a touchdown. Wade Porch tied the game at seven with his kick.
The Diggers fumbled the kickoff and John O’Neill recovered for the Warriors at Lead-Deadwood’s 26 yard line. With 2:29 to play in the first quarter, Dalton McCollam scored from eight yards out to put Bennett County up 14-6, after the Wade Porch kick.
Lead-Deadwood moved the ball up the field in the second quarter and Sundance Kemp punched it in on a four yard run to make it 14-13. The Diggers missed the kick, but a costly personal foul penalty on the Warriors gave them a second chance and instead of kicking it, they went to the run and converted, taking the lead, 15-14 with 8:37 to play in the half.
Both defenses played well the rest of the half, making it a 15-14 game at the break.
In the third period, the Warriors mounted a drive and were knocking on the door of the goal when Larson stepped up big again, intercepting a Kray Krolikowski pass at the goal line and returning it to the 34.
The Warrior defense held and the third quarter ended with the score still 15-14.
Bennett County took the lead on Porch’s field goal, which was followed by the Larson kickoff return for a touchdown.
Bennett County had two more possessions but could not get past mid field and took the heartbreaking loss, 21-17, falling to 2-2 on the season.
“Big plays won the game,” said head coach Jeff Krolikowski. “We have to take away the big plays. Football is a game of momentum and it changed immediately late in the game when they ran back the kickoff. We also need to do a better job of securing the football and correcting our miscues. They won the battle at the line early in the game and we controlled the line late, but the big plays hurt us. We are coming back to full strength after missing some starters so we look forward to that.”
The Warriors face Pine Ridge on the road this week with a 7 p.m. start time. Next week is Homecoming with the Warriors taking on unbeaten Todd County at 7 p.m. MT.
