Youn 4-Hers set up their calves for the judges.
The 4-H Market Livestock Sale and 4-H Premium Livestock Sale were held on Friday evening, August 12, during the Bennett County Fair.
“It was another outstanding sale and the 4-H members, leaders and fair board appreciate the continued community support,” stated Nancy Pauly, SDSU Extension Educator-Family and Consumer Science.
Laura Hodson showed the Grand Champion Market Steer, which was purchased by Jack and Garnet Audiss for $2.10 per pound. The steer’s selling weight was 1,261 pounds. The Reserve Champion Steer, exhibited by Tate Petrak, weighed 1,295 pounds and was purchased by Tater’s Restaurant for $1.95 per pound.
The sale average on the 25 head of steers sold was $1.72 per hundred and a gross total average per head of $2,045.70. The average weight of the calves was 1,188 pounds.
Other beef buyers included: Big Bats (2), Doug O’Bryan Contracting, First National Bank-Gordon, Martin Drug and Mercantile, Bair Ford, Lacreek Electric, Modern Farm Equipment, Lynn’s Dakotamart, Martin Livestock Auction, GE Associates, Kratovil’s True Value, Ireland Brothers, Wayne Livermont, Jack and Garnet Audiss, Fuchs Locker, General Store, Steve and Paula Livermont, Risse UV Ranch, Crossroads Inn, Sasse Animal Clinic, Slattery Brothers, and Farmers Coop.
The calves will be slaughtered August 15-17 and August 22-23. If anyone would like to view the carcasses contact Fuchs Locker. Each calf was ultra-sounded on August 11 by Dan Hines with data sent to the Cup Lab.
The results will then be tabulated at the SDSU meat lab and should be available by the week of August 29. Once these results are received, a carcass award will be given out for the best market beef sponsored by Pride Grain.
Another award to be named is the Supreme Champion Beef based 30 percent on live placing, 30 percent on rate of gain and 40 percent on carcass placing.
The winner will receive a savings bond from Doug O’Bryan Contracting and a jacket from Pride Grain. Anyone wanting the data results from carcass and supreme champion competition should contact the Bennett County Extension Office.
A Market Swine was sold for $1.90 a pound, and the Ireland Brothers was the buyer. Jim and Kathy Mansfield purchased the Market Sheep for $1.85 a pound.
In the 2011 4-H premium auction, Grand Champion breeding heifer from Ben Smith premiumed to Farmers Coop, other breeding heifers premiumed from Ireland Brothers, and Doug O’Bryan Contracting. A poultry entry was premiumed by Ryan and Tiffany Pettit. Valentine Livestock premiumed a feeder lamb. Rabbit premiums provided by Gerry and Carol Palmer, Farmers Coop, and Valentine Livestock. One goat premium came from Sportsman’s Lanes.
The feeder calves premium buyers were Doug O’Bryan Contracting, Farmers Coop, Stuart and Tracee Livermont, Crossroads Inn, General Store, Nick and Gina Risse, Martin Livestock, Jack Long and Valentine Livestock.
