The Warrior wrestlers ran away with the team title at the Red Cloud Invitational this past Saturday, decorating 5 individual champions, one 2nd, two 3rd and three 4th place finishes. Teams competing (in order of finish…as best as I could remember!): Bennett Co. (BC) 168, Newcastle (N) 89, Rapid City Stevens JV (RCS) 84, Todd Co. (TC) 79, Pine Ridge (PR) 74, Red Cloud (RC) 71, Hill City (HC) 65, Custer JV (Cu) 61, Hot Springs JV (HS) 60, Sioux Co. (SC) 41, Hay Springs (Hay) 25, Little Wound (LW) 15.
Last year we finished second at this tournament, missing out on the title by a single point. This year, going in, we had a goal as a team to come home with the team title. We were a bit shorthanded, missing some key kids due to illness and injury, so we knew we would have to wrestle well to win it all…and that’s just what we did.
We had opportunities to win some additional matches where we were winning but then got caught and pinned (wrestling junkies saw this happened to one of SD’s best ever wrestlers this past weekend as well). Also, we had a few kids that were on the recovering end of illness or injury and weren’t quite up to their best. However, on the whole we had a very good outing.
