»Regional Wrestling results from Hill City

The Region 4B Wrestling Tournament was held this past Saturday in Hill City with the best kids from Districts 7B & 8B battling it out for a chance to advance to the state tournament. We brought 10 and felt we had a chance to see at least half of that group advance but, despite wrestling well, we came up just short with four qualifiers.
Sam got us off to a good start, pinning his way through the tournament which included avenging his loss at districts against the 7th rated wrestler in the state. In each of his matches he looked strong, focused and really ready to wrestle.
Chandler wrestled well and, despite giving up size and age, was just one victory away from advancing…impressive for an undersized 7th grader.
Jeremy was still unable to participate due to his rib injury. Although he was injured for much of the 2nd half of the season, he was a nice addition to our team this year.
For the second weekend in a row, Skyler had a tough Hot Springs kid in the semi’s. Skyler wrestled well, scoring first but he came up just short in the end and had to settle for 3rd.
Seth started the day not knowing if he would be able to wrestle due to a shoulder injury sustained at districts. He gutted it out, but simply was too handicapped by his injury to be able to advance, losing to two kids he would normally beat (both qualified for state).
Taylor wrestled tough this weekend, taking charge of each match early and then cruising on to a first place finish. He definitely stepped it up this weekend and looks poised to make some noise at state.
Marcus wrestled well to close out his season, but like Chandler was young and undersized for this level. Marcus definitely has a bright wrestling future ahead of him.
Dalton had another good outing in a weight class that had 4 rated wrestlers. He continues to frustrate his opponents with his steady attacking style and unique combination of finesse and strength.
Jordon lost a tough match at districts (3rd place match), one that could have gone either way, but it made a big difference relative to his path to advance. Jordon really came on strong at the end of the season and should be poised to take it to the next level next year.
Despite losing both of his matches, Sawyer wrestled well. His 2nd match went back and forth and could have gone either way. His opponent ended up placing 4th (this could have been Sawyer!). For his first year wrestling, that’s pretty impressive.
Teams competing (in order of finish): Stanley County (SC) 151, Hot Springs (HS) 140.5, Philip Area (PA) 140.5, Bennett County (BC) 86.5, Newell (N) 78.5, Custer (C) 76, Lemmon/McIntosh (LM) 72, Harding County (HC) 63, Mobridge/Pollock (MP) 51, Hill City (HC) 32, Sully Buttes (SB) 21, St. Thomas More (STM) 19, Red Cloud (RC) 7.
The state tournament is this Friday and Saturday in Aberdeen. Sam, Skyler, Taylor and Dalton all have good chances to place if they wrestle like they did Saturday. It should be a fun and exciting weekend.
