The District 7B Wrestling Tournament was held this past weekend with our Warrior grapplers advancing 10 to the regional tournament. Teams competing (in order of finish): Hot Springs (HS) 186, Philip Area (PA) 161.5, Custer (C) 132, Bennett County (BC) 122.5, Red Cloud (RC) 60, Hill City (HC) 46.5, St. Thomas More (STM) 40.
We started the day filling 12 of the 14 weight classes. Up to this point we have mostly been able to have more than one wrestler at a weight class but this being districts, we were limited to just one. Not participating were Lincoln Whirlwind Horse, Roy Risse, Brandon Blanco, Cody Larson, and Tyler Bakley. However, these kids deserve recognition as they are a big reason for our overall success this season and having them in the practice room simply pushed everyone else to be better.
Sam’s bracket had four kids that have all been rated during the season, including 2 (Sam and the Hill City wrestler) that have been rated all season. This Hill City wrestler is one that Sam has battled back and forth with all year. Unfortunately for Sam, he ended up on the short end of this tough match.
Chandler is really a 112 pounder so he is giving up some size wrestling up a weight class. However, he wrestled well, avenging a loss from earlier in the season. This was the win that propelled him into the medal round.
Jeremy has been nursing cracked ribs for about a month and wasn’t ready to wrestle just yet. However, given the number of wrestlers in this bracket he was able to default through and place 4th adding to our team point total.
Skyler ran into a tough Hot Springs wrestler in the semi’s but came back strong finishing third. Skyler and the two kids who placed above him are all rated in the state.
Brady wrestled well in his last match (the one he needed to advance to regions) but came up just short (the match was much closer than the final score would indicate).
Seth hurt his shoulder in his semi’s match but gutted it out to advance to the finals where he defaulted. Hopefully he can heal up in time for regions.
Taylor had one of the more exciting finals matches against a ranked opponent from Custer. Taylor led throughout the match, but it remained close to the end. It’s quite possible that these two would meet up in the finals at regions.
Marcus was perhaps our surprise wrestler of this tournament. He wrestled well going 2-1 on the day and placing 3rd.
Brad Hahn filled in for Lincoln (injury) at 160 which is really 2 weight classes higher than he has wrestled all season. He wrestled well but couldn’t overcome the size of the kids in this weight class.
Dalton met up with a Custer kid that he has wrestled and beaten three times previous to Saturday. A good defensive wrestler will learn your strengths and try to take those away to keep the score close to the end and that just what happened. However, Dalton once again prevailed.
Jordon has been wrestling well as of late and Saturday was no different. His last match was against a Custer wrestler that is a pretty even match for Jordon. If they were to wrestle this one again, the out come could easily be different.
Sawyer got the fourth seed due to criteria (the other three kids all placed last year at districts). However, he looked strong in winning his last match and it would have been fun to see him wrestle the kid who placed 2nd.
With the Region 4B Tournament this Saturday in Hill City, we will have our hands full trying to heal up and stay healthy without losing our focus. Skills and conditioning are our strengths at this point. If we can raise our intensity to our highest level yet, we should have a good outing this weekend.
