Wrestlers capture own tournament

The team with their 1st place trophy

Saturday was the 35th annual Bennett County Invitational wrestling tournament. Wrestling in front of our home crowd is always fun and provides an extra bit of motivation to wrestle well. Our team responded well, earning the team title. Teams competing in order of finish: Bennett Co. (BC) 151.5, Rapid City Central JV (RCC) 117, Winner JV (W) 105, Rapid City Stevens JV (RCS) 102, Crawford (C) 79.5, Valentine JV (V) 75.5, Custer JV (Cu) 70, Todd Co. (TC) 62, Red Cloud (RC) 50, Hill City (HC) 48, Pine Ridge (PR) 32, Lyman JV (L) 31, Little Wound (LW) 4.
Individually we had a nice tournament with 5 champions 2 thirds and 1 fourth place finish. Sam was voted the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament after avenging one of his losses this season against the 10th rated wrestler from HC. Chandler moved up a weight class to try to earn some additional team points and was close to winning his last match that would have earned him a medal. Skyler had a nice tournament pinning his way through the competition.
This weekend was Cody’s first action of the year after recovering from a football injury. He wrestled well going 3-1 for the day and placing 3rd. Brady also had a good tournament placing 4th. After being sick earlier in the week, Brandon lacked the stamina needed to finish strong in a match where he led until the final seconds. This kid pinned Brandon earlier in the year which indicates Brandon is catching up to his competition. Seth had the most pins (4) in the shortest amount of time for the tournament on his way to an individual title.
Tyler and Brad both had their first year inexperience get in their way of advancing, despite wrestling well. Taylor won his bracket including a tough match in the finals.
Marcus lost a close match that would have earned him a medal. Dalton, like Skyler and Seth, pinned his way to an individual title. Jordan was in the 2nd largest bracket of the tournament and was coming off an illness which didn’t help his cause. Despite that he went 1-2 on the day. Sawyer had his best outing yet as he earned a 3rd place finish. Jeremy Huether, Roy Risse, and Lincoln Whirlwind Horse were not in our lineup for the day due to illness or injury.

Friday evening, the wrestling team competed in a home dual meet against Todd County. This is the first dual meet we have had in several years and our kids came ready to wrestle. The only points we gave up all night were at 103 and 215 (our two open wt classes). It is really great to have the ability to move kids around, fill in for some that were out with illness, and still have pretty much a full line up. This is really a great bunch of kids that make up our wrestling team. Hopefully we can add more duals to our schedule in the years to come.
