The tenth rated Cheyenne Eagle Butte Lady Braves found themselves in a battle with Bennett County early in girls high school basketball before pulling away on the strength of a 19-0 run for a 51-33 win Thursday in Martin.
The game was a makeup from Dec. 30 when a blizzard caused postponement of that contest and the Brave made the Lady Warriors pay for several key turnovers.
Bennett County’s defense and play making in the first quarter shot them to an 8-5 lead with Brooke Bair putting in four free throws and Laura Hodson and Rebecca Vander May scoring a field goal.
A field goal by Bair put the Warriors up 10-7, but the visiting Braves scored six quick points with Calby Pearman tossing in four and Kiri Schumacher two to go up 13-10. A late basket by Bennett County’s Tania Risse made it a 13-12 game after one quarter.
The Lady Warriors took the lead back on a drive and score by Abbie Alexander to start the second quarter and following a score by the Braves Schumacher, Harriett Standing Soldier scored to make it 16-15, Bennett County. After the Braves went up by two points, another basket by Standing Soldier with 5:27 to play in the half tied the game at 18. From there, everything went south for Bennett County.
Several turnovers by Bennett County aided the Braves in scoring 19 unanswered points with the Warriors not scoring until midway through the third period, putting them in a 37-18 hole.
Bennett County finally responded with a six point run of their own and would trail 39-25 heading to the final quarter.
Bennett County battled to get back in the game, trailing 44-31 on an Abbie Alexander basket, but it was too late and the Lady Braves took care of the basketball to take home the 51-33 win.
Abbie Alexander led the Lady Warriors offense with 9 points. Brooke Bair added 8, Harriet Standing Soldier 6, Tania Risse and Laura Hodson 4 and Rebecca Vander May 2.
