Bennett County applied the three Ds of basketball...defense, defense and more defense, in a 56-35 rout of Red Cloud Jan. 21 on the Warriors court in Martin.
Bennett County jumped to a 7-2 lead on field goals by Harriet Standing Soldier, Abbie Alexander and Laura Hodson and a free throw by Kaitlyn Rayhill, but Red Cloud stormed back with six straight points late in the quarter to take an 8-7 lead at the horn.
The Lady Warriors turned up the defense another notch in the second quarter and cranked up the offense and went on a 20-0 run, taking a 27-8 lead with 1:33 to play in the half.
Red Cloud finally shook off the sluggish start when Cassandra Black Horn scored to make it 27-10.
Tania Risse led the Warriors charge scoring nine straight points for Bennett County as she buried shot after shot from the free throw line area. Risse finished the half with 15 points and Bennett County took a 31-11 lead to the half.
Bennett County started the third quarter like they finished the second, extended the lead to 26 at 39-13.
Red Cloud turned Bennett County turnovers in to quick points and put up seven straight to trail 39-20.
Four points by senior Kaitlyn Rayhill, including a jumper at the buzzer put Bennett County up 47-26 after three quarters.
Bennett County rolled to the 56-35 win with an even fourth quarter.
Tania Risse had a big night with 19 points. Harriet Standing Soldier and Brooke Bair chipped in 8, Laura Hodson 6, Kaitlyn Rayhill 5, Abbie Alexander 4, Rebecca Vander May 4 and Megan Slattery 2.
Gena Arellano led Red Cloud with 11 points.
“The girls came out ready to play,” said interim coach Bob Graham. “They executed well on defense and we had a total team effort.”
Bennett County also won the JV matchup, 22-13 with Bobbi Standing Soldier having a strong night on offense with 10 points. Rebecca Vander May, Taryn Lessert and Rayel Livermont all scored 3 points and Megan Slattery added 2 and Sabrina Fanning 1.
