Bennett County was riding the momentum wave of a thrilling overtime win over Lyman Thursday, and looked like they would blow by Philip Saturday, leading by 16 late in the game, but the Scotties rallied to make it a game.
Bennett County’s lead went from 16 to 11 at the end of three and Philip put up 24 fourth quarter points, nearly matching their output for three quarters to take a 56-55 lead with just seconds left. Eli Livermont drilled a three pointer as time was winding down to put the Warriors back on top, 58-56. A desperation shot by the Scotties failed and Bennett County survived another nail biter.
Bennett County led 14-13 after one quarter and 28-17 at the half.
“We came out and played well in the first half,” said coach Ken Soderlin. “We had good intensity in the first half, not the same intensity in the second half. They hit some nice shots and Ryan Risse was in foul trouble in the second half.”
Ryan Risse topped the scoring with 18 points, followed by a solid shooting game for Dayre Evans with 17. Eli Livermont added 8 points, Grant Strain 6, Wade Porch 5, Kaipo Heath 4.
Jeff O’Connell led Philip with 17 and Jordan Hauk had 9.
Bennett County won the JV game, 38-27, with Layne Livermont tossing in 9, Kray Krolikowski 8, Keali’i Heath 6, Jon McDonnell 5, Jacob Waln 4, Kyler Rayhill 3, Wade Porch 3.
Bennett County’s next game is Thursday at Red Cloud. They return home to face Kadoka Feb. 1.
