Bennett County found themselves coming up just short in each game they played in the Jones County Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament last week. They lost the opening round matchup with Kadoka 47-45, then lost to Colome 50-47 in round two. On the final day, Bennett County led early again, but lost in the end 53-49 to Stanley County.
In the Thursday afternoon contest, Bennett County scored the first two points of the game on a drive by Ryan Risse, but they fell behind 10-2 as the Kougars Orin Vander May and Cody Young scored four points each.
A score at the buzzer by the Warriors Kaipo Heath made it a 13-8 score after one quarter with Kadoka leading.
Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter and Kadoka left the floor leading 22-18 at the break.
Ryan Risse took charge in the third quarter, driving the lane and scoring at will, putting up 10 straight points for Bennett County, closing the gap to one score at 30-28.
Bennett County seized momentum at the end of the third quarter after trailing 33-28 as they scored the final six points to take a 34-33 lead at the horn on scores by Heath, Will Schulz and a pair of free throws by Risse.
Kadoka recaptured the lead early in the fourth quarter and never gave it up again, letting the Warriors to within one at 46-45 late, but Bennett County made just four of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to add to their misery.
Kadoka played just well enough to pull out the 47-45 win and move on to face White River in the semifinals.
