Laura Hodson calls for the ball

Gordon-Rushville showed Bennett County why many expect them to go a long ways in the playoffs this season as the senior dominant team put a 57-29 thumping on the Lady Warriors Friday night in Martin.
The host Warriors looked sharp early and took a 3-0 lead on a deep shot by senior Harriet Standing Soldier, but the Lady Mustangs rolled off the next eight points in the game, prompting a coach Thompson time-out for Bennett County.
The Warriors responded with a quick basket by freshman Tania Risse off an offensive rebound. Bennett County played solid defense but could not find their range and trailed 15-5 after one quarter.
A Laura Hodson score made it a 23-13 game in the second quarter, but the Lady Mustangs turned up the defensive heat and out-scored the Warriors 10-5 to finish the half leading 33-18.
A Brooke Bair score in the third quarter made it a 34-20 game, but Gordon-Rushville went on an 11-0 tear, putting the game out of reach. A late three pointer by Taryn Lessert gave Bennett County just their fifth point of the third quarter and the Lady Warriors trailed 47-23 heading into the fourth.
The Lady Mustangs coasted to the 57-29 win on the Warriors floor.
Harriet Standing Soldier and Tania Risse led Bennett County with 6 points each. Abbie Alexander added 5, Megan Slattery 4, Laura Hodson 3, Taryn Lessert 3 and Brooke Bair 2.
In the JV game, Bennett County had a commanding lead late, then withstood a Gordon-Rushville rally for a 33-31 win.
Megan Slattery tossed in eight points for the Lady Warriors and Taryn Lessert, Tania Risse and Bobbi Standing Soldier all added seven. Lindsay Johnson and Rayel Livermont scored two points each.
On Saturday, Dec. 18, Bennett County defeated Lyman County, 34-28.
Harriet Standing Soldier reached double figures with 15 points. Laura Hodson chipped in six, Taryn Lessert 5, Megan Slattery 4 and Brooke Bair 2.
The JV tossed Lyman 28-16, led by Megan Slattery’s 9 points. Bobbi Standing Soldier added 6, Taryn Lessert 5, Sabrina Fanning 4, Rayel Livermont 3 and Rebecca Vander May 1.
Coach Travis Thompson said the offense has struggled but will improve as the season goes on.
“One positive thing we’re doing is going deep on our bench and getting a lot of players quality playing time and that will pay off at district time,” said coach Thompson. “Our shots will start falling and defensively, we’re playing well other than the Gordon-Rushville game, and they are a very good team.”
