Bennett County gave Gordon-Rushville all it could handle in a thrilling boys basketball game, highlighted by sizzling three point shooting down the stretch that made for a see-saw lead change Dec. 17 in Martin.
A crucial technical foul on Bennett County’s Eli Livermont stung the Warriors as they saw their four point lead quickly evaporate and turn to a Mustang one point lead with just under two minutes to play in the game.
Livermont was called for his fifth foul on an offensive foul as he drove to the basket. In frustration, Livermont, knowing he fouled out of the game, went directly to the bench instead of waiting for the refs to signal in a sub, calling for a technical foul.
Gordon-Rushville’s sharp shooter Kalen Coats buried the two free throws. Coats then put the Mustangs on top, 53-52, with a three pointer for a rapid change of events. Bennett County never recovered and was forced to foul down the stretch and lost 64-59 as Coats made eight straight free throws to ice the game for the visitors.
Coats finished with a game high 24 points to lead Gordon-Rushville. Ryan Risse led Bennett County with 17 points. Eli Livermont added 15, Ryan Richards 13, Dayre Evans 5, Grant Strain 4, Colin Kuxhaus 2, Will Schulz 2 and Kaipo Heath 1. Derek Janssen had 13 points for the Mustangs.
