Class & Family Reunion Day

By Tim Huether
It’s going to take 100 big bright candles for the birthday cake for Martin as the town will turn 100 years old, marking it’s Centennial. A group of area residents has been working diligently to make sure the year is honored properly and will be one to remember.
The celebrating will begin Dec. 31 at the Martin Grade School Activity Center with the doors opening at 5:30, followed by a fabulous fireworks display.
After the fireworks, it will be a special treat called, A Taste of Martin, favorite foods provided by many local closet chefs from the area. Traditional dishes from the community will be served reflecting the heritage of Martin. The cost is just one dollar to sample the food available.
Many special Centennial souvenirs will be showcased and for sale, from t-shirts, mugs, postcards, calendars and a special “Memories of our Hometown” history book.
There will be a video commissioned by the Centennial commission and the Heritage Center, put together by Tom Goetzinger also on sale that night.
Tom Goetziner of TRG Productions will be playing music of the century that evening and the public is invited to take in and be a part of this special celebration.
The Kickoff is just the beginning of the year’s events with many more events planned throughout the year.
On July 1, the Martin Post Office will offer a Centennial Postmark cancellation from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
On July 2, there will be another special postmark cancellation, from 9-11 a.m. The Heritage Center will be open at 9 a.m. for registration and souvenirs. A quilt show will take place from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Activity Center. The 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Corps of the Black Hills will hold a concert after the 11 a.m. parade. Schools will be opened from 1-5 p.m. and the Senior Citizen Center will open from 1-5 p.m. with a quilt display and sandwiches and desserts.
On July 2, there will be a Knights of Columbus Soap Box Derby at 2 p.m. and the Inland Theatre will open for an old time movie at 3 p.m. There will be a Martin Volunteer Fire Dept. water fight, a trivia scavenger hunt and more. There will be a BBQ from 5-7 p.m., a street dance from 7-9 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m.
On Sunday, July 3, the Heritage Center will open at 9 a.m. with breakfast from 9-10:30 a.m. There will be a community worship at 10 a.m. Entertainment at the Heritage Center will take place from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Schools will be opened from 1-5 p.m. and the Senior Citizen Center will open from 11-3 p.m. with a quilt display.
