Bennett County used a stout defensive effort and opportunistic play to soundly defeat Pine Ridge in high school football, 43-0, Friday evening in Pine Ridge.
With 1:36 to play in the first quarter Kaipo Heath scored on a 16 yard run to put Bennett County on top 6-0. Wade Porch tacked on the extra point with the kick after.
With 5:54 to go in the half, Eli Livermont intercepted a Pine Ridge pass at the 18 yard line and took it in for a touchdown. Porch again added the kick after for a 14-0 score.
On Pine Ridge’s next possession, they tried to get the passing game going again, but an incomplete pass that was not thrown forward, past the line of scrimmage was scooped up by Jon McDonnell at the 48 yard line of Pine Ridge and McDonnell ran it in for another quick touchdown for Bennett County with 5:05 to play in the half. Porch’s kick made it 21-0.
At one minute to play in the first half, Bennett County scored again, with Taylor Scherer taking it in from four yards out, but the point after was no good, making it 27-0.
Pine Ridge tried to pass again and with 40 seconds to play in the half, Livermont had his second interception of the half, taking it to the 21 yard line of the Thorpes.
With 11 seconds to play in the half, Kaipo Heath ran it in from one yard out for Bennett County. Grant Strain on a fake kick after, passed to a wide open Ryan Risse for the two point conversion and a 35-0 Warrior lead.
Bennett County scored 28 points in the final six minutes of the first half.
To start the third quarter, the game was played with a running clock since the Warriors were up by 35 points, making the second half a fast one. The third quarter was scoreless, but Bennett County scored on a Kray Krolikowski pass to Ryan Risse for a 57 yard touchdown pass with 2:15 to play in the game. Grant Strain passed to Ryan Risse for the two point conversion, making the final score 43-0.
“We went in there prepared to play a good team,” said coach Jeff Krolikowski. “We capitalized on their miscues right away and put them in a hole. We played a good game, especially the defense. The offense also played well.”
Krolikowski said the ball bounced the Warriors way several times, but added, “Everyone is hustling and continues to play hard on every play and when that happens, you put yourself in the right position more often. Even when we make mistakes, hustle makes up for it.”
Krolikowski said this week’s opponent, Hill City, is down a bit from past years but assured, they will not look past anyone and will come to play hard and not have a let down.
“Kaipo Heath led the Warrior rushing attack with 76 yards on 15 carries and 2 touchdowns. Taylor Scherer added 24 yards on 8 carries and 1 touchdown, and Eli Livermont ran for 5 yards on 2 carries. Grant Strain had 4 yards on 1 rush and Kray Krolikowski added 3 yards on 1 carry.
Kray Krolikowski was 7 for 9 passing for 116 yards, including a 57 yard touchdown strike. Eli Livermont was 1 for 2 for 5 yards and Grant Strain was 2 for 3 for 6 yards. Strain pass for 2 conversions.
Ryan Risse led the passing attack with 94 yards on 6 catches, the longest a 57 yard scoring reception. Wade Porch caught 1 pass for 16 yards; Taylor Scherer 1 reception for 7 yards; Kaipo Heath 1 reception for 6 yards and grant Strain 1 reception for 4 yards.
Defensively, the Warriors have allowed just 21 points all season while scoring 168.
Ryan Risse led the defense with 3 solo and 9 assisted tackles. Taylor Scherer added 2 solo, 4 assisted tackles and a forced fumble, and Dalton McCollam had 1 solo and 5 assisted tackles. Kaipo Heath had 5 assisted tackles; Jon McDonnell 1 solo, 3 assisted, 1 fumble recovery for a 48 yard touchdown; Lukas Divan 3 assisted; Eli Livermont 2 solo, 1 assisted and 2 interceptions, including one touchdown off an interception; Jordon Bakley 1 solo, 1 assisted; John O’Neill 1 solo, 1 assisted; Wade Porch 1 assisted; Kray Krolikowski 1 solo; Grant Strain 1 solo; Jason Charger 1 assisted; Colin Kuxhaus 1 assisted; Barry Toczek 1 assisted.
Bennett County improves to 4-1 on the season and plays at Hill City this Friday at 6:30 p.m.
