It was all Bennett County on Friday night under the lights as they clipped the Todd County Falcons, 47-7 in high school football in Martin.
It was all Bennett County in the end, but Todd County put the host Bennett County Warriors on their heels early Friday night in high school football action, marching down the field for an early score and a 7-0 lead. Facing a fourth down and eight from the 12 yard line, Todd County scored with 5:53 to play in the opening quarter. The kick after was good.
Todd County forced Bennett County to punt for the second straight time and moved the ball again down the field, and again faced a fourth down at the 12 yard line, needing one yard for a first down. This time, Bennett County stopped the run and took possession at the 13 yard line.
Bennett County’s Kaipo Heath fumbled the ball at the 24 yard line, but an alert teammate, Ryan Risse, picked up the ball and raced 72 yards down the sidelines before being tackled at the four, setting up Bennett County deep in the red zone.
On the next play, Eli Livermont fired a pass to Risse in the end zone for a Warrior touchdown with 10:09 to play in the first half. Porch kicked the extra point through to tie the game at seven.
On the Falcon’s next possession, they fumbled the ball at their own 40 yard line and an opportunistic Ryan Risse scooped it up and ran down the right sideline before being tackled at the six yard line. A personal foul for a horse collar tackle put the ball at the three yard line.
Taylor Scherer punched it in from three yards out to give Bennett County the lead. Porch’s kick made it a 14-7 game.
Todd County moved the ball to Bennett County’s 45 and were in a fourth and four situation. The Falcon’s decided to go for it, but a fumbled snap killed that plan and Bennett County took over on downs from there.
Bennett County pounded the ball down to the two yard line where Wade Porch powered it in for another Warrior touchdown with 1:53 to play in the half. Porch’s kick was wide right, making it a 20-7 score.
Todd County was forced to punt again, giving Bennett County another possession. Warrior running back Kaipo Heath raced down the sidelines for a 53 yard touchdown run, but a block nullified the play.
However, three plays later, Eli Livermont hooked up with Ryan Risse on a 44 yard bomb for a touchdown with 20 seconds to play in the half. Porch’s kick made it a 20 point lead at 27-7. The Warriors scored all 27 points in the second quarter.
Todd County was snake-bit by the fumble again in the second half, fumbling it away at the 45 of Bennett County after a positive offensive drive into Bennett County territory.
Todd County looked to turn the momentum around, stopping a long Bennett County drive with an interception at the Falcon 15 yard line.
Todd County was forced to punt though and Bennett County marched down the field and scored on a 18 yard pass from Krolikowski to Grant Strain with 4:59 to play in the third quarter. Porch’s kick fell short, leaving the score at 33-7.
After another Falcon punt, Kray Krolikowski raced into the end zone on a quarterback keeper around the left end from 10 yards out. Grant Strain fired a bullet to Ryan Risse in the end zone for the conversion, but a penalty called it back. After moving the ball 10 yards back, Eli Livermont connected with Wade Porch for a pass for conversion and a 41-7 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Eli Livermont scored on a quarterback keeper from 20 yards out for the games final score. The pass for conversion failed.
Todd County played well early, but several fumbles or bobbled snaps put them in bad situations, killing their momentum, and Bennett County’s offense has too many weapons and options to put the ball back in their hands again and again.
The Warriors showed why they are 6-1 on the season, staying calm on defense when their backs were to the wall and showing off a diverse offensive attack that makes it difficult for a defense to cover.
Senior captain Ryan Risse had a monster night on both sides of the ball, recovering a pair of fumbles and taking both down near the goal line. He caught a pair of touchdown passes, covering 50 yards and had 22 tackles, seven of those solo, and forced one fumble.
The Warriors will play Little Wound Thursday in Kyle with a 1 p.m. kickoff time. The Warriors will be in the playoffs, and if they win Thursday, will likely host the first round game on Tuesday, October 26. The second round game will be Monday, November 1 at the high seed and the third round will be Saturday, November 6.
