The Bennett County Warriors football team fought mightily early on, but too much size, speed and depth by their opponent, ended their season by getting knocked out in round one of the 11B high school football playoffs, falling to Mobridge-Pollock 59-16.
Both team boasted 7-1 records and standout statistics, but the Tigers were better and are a very solid team, top to bottom and have a good chance at landing at the dome for the championship.
Bennett County has been out-sized by opponents all year long, but their overall athleticism and determination took them to seven straight wins to finish the regular season. Tuesday evening, they simply faced a better opponent with a lot of weapons.
Mobridge-Pollock showed off some of those weapons early, scoring on a 56 yard pass play on the second play of the game and add a two point conversion on another pass play to put a quick eight on the board.
Bennett County took the ball on their first possession and marched down the field on a nice drive and Wade Porch kicked a 27 yard field goal to make it 8-3 with 6:18 to play in the opening quarter.
Mobridge-Pollock answered back quickly with Jesse Dienert blasting into the end zone from three yards out just three minutes later and the kick after made it 15-3.
After Bennett County was forced to punt on their next possession, a Mobridge-Pollock player touched the ball while it was still live and Jordon Bakley alertly pounced on it, giving the Warriors the ball right back and in good field position at the 42 of the Tigers with 2:04 left in the quarter.
The quarter ended with Bennett County marching down the field and senior standout Ryan Risse pounded it in from five yards out for a touchdown with just over a minute gone in the second quarter.
Wade Porch’s kick sailed left making it a 15-9 game.
The Tigers ripped the momentum right back when Jesse Dienert raced 80 yards for a touchdown shortly after the Warriors score. The kick after made it a 22-9 game.
On Bennett County’s next possession, Eli Livermont was intercepted on a nice defensive play by Brady Spiry of the Tigers, setting them up at the 32 yard line of Bennett County.
The Warriors forced the ball out and recovered the fumble at the 17 yard line, stalling a Tiger drive with 5:38 to play in the half.
Another big running play put six more on the board for Mobridge-Pollock with Bailley Friesz scampering 65 yards to the end zone and a 29-9 lead after the kick.
The Warriors were forced to punt again with a minute to play in the half, but Ryan Risse recovered a Mobridge-Pollock fumble of the punt and took it in from 14 yards out for a Warrior touchdown. Taylor Scherer kicked the extra point through for a 29-16 score and that would end the first half of scoring.
In the second half, Mobridge-Pollock tacked on another six points when Dienert again banged out a big run, this one from 85 yard out, just one play after another Tiger touchdown was called back on a penalty. The kick after made it 36-16.
Dexter Netterville scored on a two yard run with 1:42 to play in the third. The extra point made it 43-16.
In the fourth quarter, Netterville scored from 14 yards out and the kick made it 50-16.
Netterville scored again, from one yard out, and the kick after pushed the lead to 57-16. A safety of the Warriors gave the Tigers two more points, ending the scoring on the night at 59-16.
Mobridge-Pollock will move on to round two and play Redfield-Doland next Monday in Mobridge.
