Bennett County finished the regular high school football season with a 7-1 record after putting a 50-0 whipping on the Little Wound Mustangs Thursday in Kyle. The Warriors used five different player to score, four of them seniors, showing off their multiple attack offense.
Bennett County took the opening kickoff and ate up most of the clock in the first quarter, scoring with 4:02 to play on a one yard plunge by senior Kaipo Heath. Wade Porch kicked the extra point through for a 7-0 lead.
Little Wound fumbled the kickoff at the 20 yard line and Bennett County pounced on it, taking over deep in the Mustang’s side of the field.
The turnover would cost them as senior Taylor Scherer broke two tackles and scored from eight yards out with 3:15 to play in the first quarter. Scherer kicked the extra point through for a 14-0 lead.
On the Mustang’s next possession, they drove to the Warriors 10 yard line where they went for it on fourth down, but an incomplete pass turned it over to Bennett County at the 10.
Bennett County struck quick when senior Ryan Risse took the ball from the quarterback’s position and raced 90 yards around the right end for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead with 9:32 showing on the clock in the second quarter. Scherer’s kick for conversion missed wide right.
After a Little Wound punt, Bennett County moved down the field to the 10 of the Mustangs. Quarterback Kray Krolikowski rolled out right and was headed for the end zone when a Little Wound hit forced a fumble, but the ball was bouncing the Warriors way as it rolled into the end zone and Kaipo Heath pounced on it for another touchdown. Porch kicked it through for a 27-0 lead.
With 10 seconds to play in the first half, Little Wound tried to pass and Taylor Scherer made them pay, making a great interception and return for a touchdown from 28 yards out. The pass for conversion failed, making it a 33-0 score and the half came to an end.
In the third quarter, the Warriors added a 33 yard field goal by Wade Porch for a 36-0 lead with 7:43 on the clock.
Ryan Risse found the end zone again on a spectacular 23 yard run that featured several broken tackles, ending with Risse dragging three defenders into the end zone for a touchdown at the 5:23 mark of the third. Scherer’s kick after made it 43-0.
Warrior senior Grant Strain found the end zone from 25 yards out late in the fourth quarter and Scherer’s kick after ended the game at 50-0.
Sophomore’s Lukas Divan and Dalton McCollam had solid games with Divan recording 13 tackles and McCollam 7. Several players had big games on the offensive side of the ball and as coach Krolikowski pointed out, it was a total team effort once again.
Bennett County faces Mobridge-Pollock in Martin Tuesday, Oct. 26, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. MT.
