Bennett County’s defense posted another high school football shutout, following a sound 46-0 beating of Hill City Friday night in Hill City. The Warriors defense has shut out four teams and has allowed just 21 points all year while the offense has scored 214, and Bennett County improved to 5-1 on the season.
The game was over early and Bennett County senior Grant Strain started the rout by taking the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown with just 14 seconds off the game clock. Wade Porch kicked the extra point through for a 7-0 lead.
After a short Hill City possession, Bennett County moved quickly down the field and senior Ryan Risse punched it in from four yards out with less than three minutes gone in the first quarter. Porch added the extra point kick and it was quickly 14-0.
Kaipo Heath scored on a five yard run with 4:47 to play in the opening quarter to make it 20-0. The kick after was no good.
On the Rangers next possession, Lukas Divan intercepted the ball near midfield and returned it to the 25 of Hill City, setting up the Warrior offense with a short field. Taylor Scherer scored on a one yard run less than a minute later to make it 26-0 for the opening quarter’s final score.
Hill City fumbled the ball away to Bennett County at the 27 yard line with 32 seconds to play in the quarter.
With just three seconds gone in the second quarter Ryan Risse scored on a one yard dive, following an outstanding catch by Grant Strain from Risse one play earlier. Strain battled a Hill City defender for the ball in the air and came down with the ball at the one yard line.
Strain then fired a pass to Risse in the end zone for the two point conversion and a 34-0 lead.
Bennett County subbed in the younger players at that point and the half ended 34-0.
Kaipo Heath scored on an eight yard run with 6:63 to play in the third and Eli Livermont connected with Grant Strain on a 13 yard pass play with 9:25 to play in the game for the final scoring, making it 46-0. Both conversions for extra points failed.
Bennett County’s seniors had big games with Ryan Risse and Kaipo Heath scoring a pair of touchdowns and Grant Strain and Taylor Scherer one touchdown each. Scherer and Risse had outstanding nights on the defensive side of the ball also.
Coach Jeff Krolikowski said he was pleased with the overall play of the team, saying everyone, from the starters to the subs played well.
“We looked sharp and the boys seem to improve week after week,” said Krolikowski. “Our blocking is getting better and better, and our line, week after week, is getting it done. They do a great job. Our special teams played well, especially the kickoff team.”
Krolikowski said his seniors have been stepping up their game and pointed out Nick Fast Wolf as a player that doesn’t always get recognized because of the position he plays, but said he has been solid.
“Nick has given us the most solid performance, week after week,” said coach Krolikowski. “I don’t have to worry about him showing up to play or what we are going to get out of him.”
Bennett County has a bye week and will not play until Oct. 15 at home against Todd County. Their final regular season game is Thursday, Oct. 21 at Little Wound.
