The American Legion Post 240, with Commander Butch Fanning presiding, held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, January 11 at the Post Home, with fifteen members present.  The agenda included discussion regarding Veteran Lyle Nelson, the Boy Scout House, reconfiguration of existing VA Black Hills Health Care services, and Legion District #2 news.

Post 240 color guard members traveled to the Black Hills National Cemetery to render honors for Lyle Nelson on Friday, January 13. A public memorial service was held on Saturday, January 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Post Home.

Utility services for the Boy Scout House will be discontinued due to lack of use and the building will be secured. There are currently no active Boy Scout troops in Martin.

District #2 Vice Commander Verle Whipple reported on the District Commander’s health issues and said that the new district will draw up bylaws at the next District Executive Committee meeting.

Gerald Goeztinger, Neil Peck, and Verle Whipple reported on the recent round table meeting held at the Hot Springs American Legion Post 71 on January 10, in conjunction with the Hot Springs VA Medical Center site visit by National American Legion Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission task force member Todd White and National Field Representative Warren Goldstein. Participants had the opportunity to express their concerns about the proposed closure of the Hot Springs VA Medical Center and restructuring of services. The VA BHHCS will continue to hold stakeholder meetings with Veterans, Veteran advocates, congressional offices, employees, community and business leaders, and the general public to answer questions, address concerns, and seek feedback to the proposals.

Post 240 salutes Bryce Fuchs for completing his superb Eagle Scout community project, a three-sided Veteran’s Memorial Wall made of individual bricks bearing the name of a living or deceased veteran, constructed at Martin Community Cemetery.

The project took on a special meaning since the death of his grandfather, Dick Fuchs, a Marine Staff Sergeant in World War II and the Korean War. Bryce will soon add to the Fuchs family honorable military service record, with his upcoming enlistment in the United States Air Force.
